Annual Moonlight Run to feature 5K, post-party
The 32nd annual Moonlight Run and Wellness Walk will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, through the streets in the Village of Williamsville. The race will kick off at Glen Avenue and Rock Street.
The Moonlight Run is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Meyers, a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
“I think it’s a great community event,” said Larry Brownell, adding that he encourages non-runners to come out and enjoy the party or watch the race.
Brownell, the Moonlight Run’s race director, noted that people from throughout Western New York attend the event and that there are great things happening in the Village of Williamsville.
The 5K is a combination of rolling hills and flat surface areas throughout the course. Brownell says runners start at dusk, and he recommends that participants wear appropriate clothing for the weather.
This year’s race will help support the Williamsville Public Library, the Williamsville Railroad Depot restoration and the newly formed Hilary Grace Foundation, which was recently created in memory of the organizer’s niece to help fight opioid addiction.
The first 1,000 participants in the Moonlight Run will receive commemorative long-sleeved shirts. Registration for the event costs $27 until Wednesday, Aug. 8. Race-day registration costs $30.
There will be awards for the top overall male and top overall female in addition to first- through third-place awards for groups in different age divisions.
Packet pickup and preregistration will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Glen Park Tavern, 5507 Main St., Williamsville. Pre-race packet pickup will not be available if registered after Aug. 13.
Runners can also pick up their packets on race day between 12:30 and 8 p.m. at the Island Park Pavilion, behind Village Hall, 5583 Main St., Williamsville.
Immediately following the race, there will be an award ceremony and post-race party at Island Park. There will be refreshments for all participants, and live music will be provided by Hit N Run.
Online registration closes at midnight on Aug. 14. For more information or to register, call 863-4747 or visit www.moonlight-run.com.
