Amherst Youth and Recreation plans summer programs

Amherst Youth and Recreation has announced some of its summer programs and open registrations. For more information or to register for a program, visit www.amherstyouthandrec.org or call 631-7132.

Free Friday night family flicks will be held at 9 p.m. Friday, July 13, with a screening of “Jumanji” at Bassett Park. Movies will be shown in the Clearfield small indoor gym in the case of rain.

Creek Critters at Amherst State Park will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19. Participants will discover which animals are lurking underwater on a hike along Ellicott Creek. Call Reinstein Woods at 683-5959 to register.

The Glen Park Weekly Nature Series, for children ages 7 and older, is held Tuesdays at the Noll Nature Center in Glen Park, located on Glen Avenue between Cayuga Road and Mill Street. Each week brings a different themed lesson about the different facets of nature. The cost is $5 per child per week. Visit www.amherstyouthandrec.org to register.

Tie-Dye Tuesdays will run until Aug. 7. The program is held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays at various parks around Amherst. Participants are asked to bring an item to tie-dye such as a T-shirt, pillowcase or socks. The next session of the program will be held on July 17 under the shelter at Billy Wilson Park and will focus on chevron tie-dye. Registration for sports clinics is now available. Several half-day, weeklong themed sports clinics, including baseball, net sports, outdoor adventure, amazing races, floor hockey, field days, game week, gatorball, splash frenzy and more, are available for children ages 6 to 13 of all ability levels. Each weekly session will include discussion of rules and strategies, basic skills training, practice drills and game play. Clinics will be held at the Clearfield Recreation Center and North Amherst Recreation Center. Must have valid resident ID to register.

Summer children’s book club is open to all children who are Amherst residents entering grades four, five and six at the start of the 2018-19 school year. There will be two meetings at the Clearfield Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 1 and 8. The program is free. Register by July 17. Swim program registration at the Clearfield and North Forest pools is now open. A wide range of programs is being offered, such as basic lessons, parent and child aquatics, synchronized swimming, water exercise and lessons for the adult non-swimmer.

Aqua zumba, for ages 16 and older, is held from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Mondays at the North Forest Pool through Aug. 6 and from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturdays at the Clearfield Pool through Aug. 11. There will be no class Saturday, July 14. Aqua zumba integrates the fun of zumba with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines to create a workout that is body toning and cardio conditioning. The cost is $25 per person with a valid resident ID.
