Joseph D. Zehler, Project Mercury engineer


Zehler Zehler Joseph D. Zehler, 82, of Williamsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.

Mr. Zehler was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y. and graduated from Buffalo East High School.

He was a private first class in the Army and fought in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

A chemical engineer, Mr. Zehler wired and assembled electronic components and installed them into air and spacecraft, including on Project Mercury, while working for McDonnell Aircraft. He later went on to work for Occidental Chemical in Grand Island from 1975 to 1985.

Mr. Zehler was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by four sons, Donald R., James, Kenneth and Robert; a daughter, Mary Hagen; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Edward.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.

Funeral services were held Dec. 10 at St. Gregory the Great Church with arrangements made by Amigone Funeral Home.
