Residents asked to identify vacancies

The Town of Amherst is developing a list of vacant or abandoned residential and commercial properties and is asking residents for help.

"The town's 43,000 parcels are spread out over 54 square miles within the town's boundaries. In some cases, it would be extremely difficult for a town employee to determine from driving on the street whether a property is truly vacant or abandoned," Supervisor Satish Mohan said.

He said it is often the neighbors who are most knowledgeable about such properties.

Residents are asked to report addresses and conditions of any vacant or abandoned properties to the Building Department by calling 631-7080 or e-mailing tketchum@amherst.ny.us.

Information on improperly maintained property can also be reported.
