Bette Zittel Wetzel, lab technician, involved with charities

We t z e l We t z e l Bette Zittel Wetzel, 84, a former lab technician at St. Francis Hospital of Snyder, of Snyder, died under Hospice Care Friday, June 30, 2006, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

A 1939 graduate of Lancaster High School, she was named that year as the school's Ms. Congeniality. After graduation, she worked at Buffalo Industrial Bank from 1941 to 1943 then after marrying her husband, Harold in 1943, worked at National Gypsum until 1950.

After her two children were born, she worked many years as a lab technician at St. Francis Hospital until 1962 when Harold, who worked for Agway, was transferred to Syracuse. There, she worked with Meals on Wheels and Friends in Service Here.

The Wetzels relocated to Snyder in 1992. In August 2004, she entered St. Francis Nursing Home in Williamsville.

Mrs. Wetzel also was a licensed real estate agent and helped her husband with a side business called Darwin Realty, Inc.

She enjoyed playing tennis and did a lot of charity work, said Harold.

"She was a very busy girl all of the time," he said. "She always kept going."

Besides her husband of 63 years, Mrs. Wetzel is survived by a son, Gregory Wetzel of Depew, a daughter, Hope Rich of Bascom, Fla; a sister, Esther Nelson of Ohio; also survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, July 3 from Beach-Tuyn Funeral Home.
